Media Day takeaways: Bear hugs, leadership and new projects

By Elizabeth Swinton
Tyler Zeller -- Restricted Free Agent The skinny: Zeller took a step back after improving through three fledgling seasons in Boston, seeing sharp declines in minutes per game, field goal percentage, and an uptick in turnovers. Zeller was squeezed out of Boston's big man rotation of Kelly Olynyk, Jared Sullinger, Amir Johnson, and Jonas Jerebko, but still put up over 18 points and nine rebounds per 36 minutes. Zeller a fit? Possibly. Zeller showed flashes of the player the Celtics picked in the first round back in 2012, but his lack of playing time means that he could be had on the cheap. But Zeller will likely seek a team that will give him playing time after playing a career-low 710 minutes this past year. Worthy pursuit? Doubtful. Zeller's in the middle ground where he's good enough to likely secure a starting spot elsewhere, not good enough to move Lopez to make that worth it, and his restricted status means that any contract that would give the Celtics pause to match would probably be too rich for Sean Marks's blood. -Devin Kharpertian Also check out: Point Guards

Nets sign free agent center Tyler Zeller to two-year deal

Allen Crabbe -- Restricted Free Agent The skinny: Crabbe was a little-used backup in Portland in his first two seasons before breaking out as a top bench option for the Trail Blazers this season. Despite backing up C.J. McCollum and Al-Farouq Aminu, Crabbe ranked third on the Trail Blazers in points per game (10.3), fourth in steals per game (0.9), and hit 2.5 three-pointers per game at an excellent 39.3 percent clip. Crabbe a fit? Yes. Crabbe can score from outside, is young (he turned 24 in April), and proved he can be an effective weapon on a playoff team. The Nets are also limited by the "poison pill" rule (aka the Gilbert Arenas rule), a provision that limits how much a team can offer another team's second-round pick in restricted free agency in the first year. That also could backfire on the Nets if they backload a huge offer, hamstringing them in future free agency periods. Worthy pursuit? Sure, as the Nets could use more shooters. But there's a good chance any deal will be matched by the Trail Blazers. What makes it unlikely isn't that he's not good, but that he is.
