Just What Could The Nets Get For Brook Lopez? Part II

Resolution: Keep firing three-pointers, but use your length on the defensive boards to limit second-chance points

The NBA has turned into a shooter's league and that’s no exception for traditional NBA big men. This year, Brook Lopez has extended his range outside the arc, connecting on 37% of his three-pointers this season -- but it's a completely new unearthed skill for the center. Looking back on his career numbers, this adaptation to his game has come out of the blue entirely. Prior to this season, Lopez had shot 31 deep bombs as a career-total; but through 28 games this season alone, he’s hit 57 of 153.

So, yeah, that's a game-changer for the once-nearly-extinct big man.

To this point, Lopez has often been the difference between a five point loss and a twenty point loss this season for the Nets, which is kind of what we expected. Lopez’s shooting has drastically improved his game too, as he’s able to drag opposing centers out of the paint, which opens it up for either Trevor Booker's insane offensive rebounds or for guards driving to the basket as the opposing shot rim protector must guard Lopez in the corner.

Although Atkinson and Lopez have made the decision for the big man not to really play in back-to-backs, this has obviously hurt the Nets in the win column, but with an eye of long-term health, it's tough to get too upset about that.

Lopez is nearing career-highs in most categories, and his scoring average of 20.5 a game is two-tenths off his career-best. In addition, he has quadrupled his assist numbers over the last two years (0.7 per game to just a hair under 3), a remarkable improvement for a veteran at the center position. With Lopez now scoring from outside, his inside numbers have improved as defenders must cover more space on the floor, seeing as, on top of the 37% three-point percentage, he’s shooting 53% from two-point range -- the third highest mark of his nine-year career.

One thing that Lopez could hope to improve on for the 2017 calendar year is rebounding. You've likely read two trillion (guesstimate) articles about Lopez's poor rebounding numbers and while he's always surrounded by strong players in that category (Reggie Evans, Kris Humphries, Trevor Booker, etc), he could stand to help out a bit more there. Of course, as he finds himself out by the three-point line more and more, those numbers aren't likely to rise -- but, hey, Lopez can't do it all by himself, so he mostly gets a pass there.

Just What Could The Nets Get For Brook Lopez? Sure, he just got his soul stolen by Larry Nance Jr, but Brook Lopez seems like a good guy. His voice is low, his hair is big, and he’s a massive nerd, literally and figuratively. He looks like a jocular kinda dude on the court; even […]

Brett Yormark: Nets to “be a major player” in free agency

AP

The Brooklyn Nets don’t have much to hang onto. They’re tied for the third-worst record in the NBA, having won only 7 of their first 25 games. After years and years of trades doubling-down on a win-now strategy, they’re now in the midst of a molasses-speed rebuild around Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young. So there’s […]

Jason Kidd Won — Again

AP

It was less than two years ago that Jason Kidd sat on a manufactured podium in the Barclays Center atrium, a smile as wide as his passing vision, basking in a round of applause from fans — and some media members — upon his official introduction as Brooklyn Nets coach. That day, it seemed like […]

Controversial Foul Call, Late Miscues Doom Nets

The Brooklyn Nets lost their fourth game of the season to the no-longer-winless Milwaukee Bucks 103-96, in a close, exciting matchup that was decided in the game’s final possessions. But Nets center Brook Lopez, who wasn’t on the court for the majority of crunch time due to foul trouble, wishes it could’ve gone differently. “I […]

The Andrea Bargnani signing is a Brooklyn Nets fan Rorschach test. It’s either a no-risk, veteran’s minimum deal for a former top overall pick that once averaged 20 points per game (great!), or a terrible defender and poor shooter who might take playing time away from the team’s younger, higher-potential players and torpedo the team’s […]

Reeling Nets seek anything in Detroit

In the scope of the season, the Nets (16-20) hit rock bottom once Brook Lopez’s 30-foot heave fell short, capping a 90-88 loss to the 76ers (6-29). A fast start for Brooklyn was followed by turnovers, missed three-point shots, and overall carelessness that fueled another embarrassing defeat, this time at home to one of the […]

Nets try to halt losing streak against sputtering Pistons

Moral victories do not go a long way in the NBA, but the Nets (10-15) put forth a gritty effort in their loss to Cleveland Friday Night, especially after they lost Deron Williams late in the second quarter with a strained calf. The Nets held the Cavaliers to 40 percent shooting, which aided a last-gasp […]

Deron Williams Trade Ideas

The Brooklyn Nets might look to trade their “Big 3” of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez, according to a report from Marc Stein of ESPN. But what might that mean for the Nets?
