Nets waive Gary Forbes

The Brooklyn Nets have waived training camp invitee and Brooklynite Gary Forbes, the team announced after their 86-62 blowout preseason victory over the Miami Heat. The announcement comes after Forbes’s best game of preseason, hitting all three of his three-pointers in eight minutes of action.

Forbes attended Benjamin Banneker Academy in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn and still lives in the borough.

The Nets roster now stands at 17 players, with fifteen guaranteed contracts and two training camp invitees (Jorge Gutierrez, Chris Johnson) that have D-League affiliations; if the Nets wanted to sign one to their D-League roster, they’d have to complete a trade through their D-League affiliate Springfield Armor. (As for making the team? Forget it. Even a minimum contract could cost them as much as $10 million.)

The timing of Forbes’s departure is odd; the team has over ten days left before they’d be required to make a decision, and since Forbes didn’t have rights held by any D-League teams, the Nets would be free to offer him a spot on the Armor. It’s possible that Forbes has a deal elsewhere prepared, either in the NBA or overseas (he played in China last season).
