A History of Nets Overtime Playoff Basketball

In Julius Erving’s first season as a Nets forward in 1973-74, Erving won the ABA MVP award amd delivered the franchise’s first ABA title. The 55-29 Nets would earn would earn the top seed in the East and would dominate the playoffs, winning twelve games and losing only two en route to the title. One of those wins, Game 3 of the ABA Finals, came with some bonus basketball. The 103-100 overtime victory occurred at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah against the Utah Stars, formerly the Los Angles Stars and Anaheim Amigos. 10,743 fans packed the Salt Palace, and despite losing, the Stars’ Jimmy Jones led all scorers with 28 points.

The Nets would go on to win another ABA title in 1976 but they would never again play postseason overtime basketball in the ABA. The New York Nets finished ABA playoff OT games with a 3-0 record, with all three games coming on the road.
