A History of Nets Overtime Playoff Basketball

New York Nets 114, Carolina Cougars 111

John Baum
John Baum’s amazing Topps card.
Foreshadowing eastern conference eight seeds in the NBA playoffs of the Aughts, the Nets made the 1973 ABA playoffs as the fourth seed with a 30-54 record. They would face the top seeded Carolina Cougars in the first round, as the ABA apparently learned how to appropriately structure playoffs this time.

After losing game one to the Cougars, the Nets lone win of the series came in overtime of game 2 at the J.S. Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. Another casualty of the lack of ABA box scores from this era, we know the Nets won 114-111, the game was played in front of 6,343 fans and the Nets John Baum led all scorers with 26 points.
