“Hip-Hip, Jorge!”

That other Jorge in the Bronx is well gone (that’s Posada), so it looks like I don’t have to feel guilty when I chant this at Barclays Center.

After playing out a full preseason in Brooklyn last season and two March 10-day contracts, the Nets signed Jorge Gutierrez to a multi-year deal on March 28th. That contract included a partial guarantee for the upcoming 2014-2015 season, which means he’ll probably make the 15-man roster, but don’t expect much more.

In 15 games last season (2 starts), Gutierrez posted averages of 4.1 points on .463/.250/.750 shooting splits, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game. He was able to find his home in the mid-range game last season, shooting .500 from 10-16 feet away, but that came at the cost of his assist percentage, which was only a mere 19.4%.

Even if Gutierrez makes it through training camp, he won’t beat out Deron Williams or Jarrett Jack for a depth chart rank higher than 3rd string at the PG. He might not even beat out Marquis Teague for that spot.

Jason Kidd couldn’t help the undrafted point guard reach his epiphany, so there’s only so much another former point guard in Lionel Hollins can do. Jorge and his 4.0 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.5 assists in 9.5 minutes per game last Orlando Summer League could fill Brooklyn’s bench with a high energy sub, but that’s really the most we can expect out of the youngster.

After all, the bench time gives him a perfect opportunity to continue caring for that hair.
