Prior to last night’s Tyshawn Taylor 360 dunk festivities, one Springfield Armor player picked up a special accolade: Armor forward Willie Reed won the D-League Player of the Week Award after recording three double-doubles in three games and averaging some eye-popping numbers: 20 points, 17.3 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game on 67% shooting from the floor.
Since the NBA D-League All-Star break, Reed is averaging 18.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.4 in 29.9 minutes per game over 11 games, recording five double-doubles. Reed has started some Twitter self-promotional frenzy from his @ShowtimeReed33 account, trying to get his way into the NBA with the hashtag #CallWillieUp.
A scout who’s watched the 6’10” Reed closely called him an athletic beast who can finish strong at the rim, but struggles with erratic play and a shaky jumper. The Armor will likely hold on to him for the rest of the D-League season, but the Nets have an open roster spot and a big man rotation seriously lacking athleticism.
