The NBA will donate all proceeds from Jason Collins jersey sales to the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, the league announced last night, and auction off his game-worn jerseys to benefit those foundations.
The proceeds from the sales will be at least $100,000, according to the league. Collins chose the number #98 for his jersey to honor Matthew Shepard, a college student who was murdered for being openly gay in 1998.
Collins’s jersey led the NBA Store online in jersey sales for at least the first three days.
The Nets have not listed Collins’s jersey on their website yet. It is normally team policy not to have jerseys available for sale for players on ten-day contracts.
Here’s a GIF of Collins’s first basket with the Nets, a 22-footer, just like we all expected.
