The Brooklyn Nets have signed sharpshooter Beau Beech to a one-year, partially guaranteed contract, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania.

Beech, who played a huge role in the Nets’ run to the Summer League Semi-Finals this month, is likely in the same boat as Yogi Ferrell, who signed a similar contract on Friday. With the Nets’ current roster nearly reaching maximum capacity, this will serve as Beech’s training camp invite — at which point, they shuttle him to Long Island, Brooklyn’s new D-League affiliate. While the odds are low that Beech, or Ferrell for that matter, will make the opening day roster, these partially guaranteed contracts offer the Nets a strategic advantage down the road.

If Beech were to just sign with the Long Island Nets, then Brooklyn would not own his rights — meaning any other franchise could swoop in and take him away. Signing Beech at the NBA level means that they’ll control his rights, can transfer him between both teams at will, and develop him without worrying about another organization reaching in. Of course, Beech seems much to be desired on the defensive end of things, but his sweet stroke could make him a very handy player down the road.

In the Nets’ Semi-Final loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Beech went 5-7 from the three-point line for 15 points and nearly willed the team to victory alongside Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Sean Kilpatrick. Perhaps, then, head coach Kenny Atkinson can see small flashes of Kyle Korver, the Atlanta Hawks’ sharpshooter he used to train, and can see potential in the former star from Northern Florida.
