The Nets invited the undrafted Mays to training camp but declined to keep him on the regular season roster. In 26 games in Springfield, Mays averaged 16.4 points and 10.6 rebounds in 36.8 minutes per game, shooting 42.2% from the field. Joseph, a former second-round pick by the Boston Celtics after four years at Syracuse, averaged 18.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 34.1 minutes per game. In 24 NBA minutes this season, Joseph shot 2-11 from the field with a -3.1 PER.

By moving Mays, the Armor now are free to play Dennis Horner – who made the Nets out of training camp last year – as a stretch four instead of at small forward, while allowing Joseph and Carleton Scott (who was on the Nets’ summer league entry and, along with Mays, was invited to training camp) to play on the wings alongside point guard Ben Uzoh.
