Russian airline ends sponsorship deal with Nets

Russian airline Aeroflot, who has been a Nets sponsor since Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov took over as the team’s primary owner in 2010, will cease sponsorship with the team.

According to a spokesperson with the airline that spoke with Russian news agency ITAR-TASS, the contract between Aeroflot and the Nets had expired and the airline had no plans to renew the agreement.

The airline entered a “multi-tiered sponsorship alliance” with the Nets in October 2010, and hosted “An Evening of Russian Culture” at Nets games in 2011 and 2013. They renewed the team’s sponsorship in 2013 despite criticism from Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who wanted the team to sponsor Russian teams rather than the Nets and British soccer club Manchester United.
