Contract: Reggie Evans signed a three-year deal worth approximately $5.1 million with the Los Angeles Clippers in a sign-and-trade that sent Evans to the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets acquired him using a trade exception, meaning they didn’t have to use any of their salary cap exceptions to sign Evans. In return, the Nets gave the Clippers the option to swap second-round picks in 2016.
The Nets wanted Evans, a historically great rebounder and solid defender with few other discernible NBA-level skills, as their backup power forward behind Kris Humphries. Evans earned the starting role in early December and never relinquished it, though improving on Evans at power forward is a priority for the Nets heading into the offseason.
Options: There are no options in Reggie Evans’s contract.
Expectations: Reggie Evans is expected to play out the duration of his contract with Brooklyn, though his small contract and historic rebounding ability makes him a possible trade chip. Once his contract expires after the 2014-15 season, Evans will be an unrestricted free agent. The Nets will own his full Bird rights and can go over the cap to re-sign him if they so choose.
