New Year’s Resolutions for the Brooklyn Nets in 2017

Congratulations, we made it to 2017, somehow, almost inexplicably.

Although the world may or may not be on the verge of nuclear annihilation, it’s always important to look back on the year that was and reflect. For the Brooklyn Nets, 2016 was an incredibly trying year from start to finish: they fired Lionel Hollins and Billy King, let Joe Johnson move on to greener pastures, shut down Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young, and then traded the latter for a rookie coming off of foot surgery. Then the Nets signed Jeremy Lin in July, but the usually healthy point guard has only played in 12 games this season after straining his hamstring twice — as the result, they’re just 8-24 and in dead last in the Eastern Conference.

In order to quell such potential injury worries, the Nets signed Greivis Vasquez to lead the second unit, but the Venezuelan would promptly re-injure his ankle and require a second surgery. Down two NBA-caliber point guards in a flash, the Nets have relied on Isaiah Whitehead and Yogi Ferrell, two rookies, to lead the charge. Of course, all of these things, no matter how promising Caris LeVert may look at times, is overshadowed by the omnipresent Boston Celtics, the team that has owned their future (James Young, Jaylen Brown) and will continue to do so for two more years (pick swap in 2017, outright owned in 2018). So, despite finding themselves in the basement once again, the Nets have no reason to tank, trade, or flop — they must only try to improve, one baby step at a time.

If that’s the case then, have they? We’re almost halfway through the season, so it’s time to look forward as best as possible. Here at The Brooklyn Game, it’s been a long-standing tradition to write these New Year’s Resolutions for the Brooklyn Nets — ironically, however, it appears as if we skipped 2016, but given the quick firing of Hollins and King, and the gruesome injury to Jarrett Jack just after the ball dropped, there were a few other important things going on at the time.

Give some of older versions a read if you’d like a laugh and a trip down memory lane, then get into our 2017 resolutions starting with owner Mikhail Prokhorov.
