This may be the wrong time to reveal this info, but the Nets second-ever NBA OT playoff game – and first franchise postseason loss in OT – came against the top seeded Chicago “expletive deleted” Bulls in the first round of the 1998 NBA Playoffs. In their first playoff appearance in four years, the eight seed New Jersey Nets trailed the Michael Jordan-led Bulls 72-62 heading into the fourth quarter of game 1 at the United Center in Chicago.

The John Calipari-coached Nets, led by Chris Gatling’s 24 points, outscored the Bulls 27-17 in the fourth quarter to force OT. With the game tied at 89 in the closing moments, the Nets almost won the game in regulation when Sherman Douglas threw a cross court heave that hit the rim at the buzzer off a Toni Kukoc miss. The Nets, without Keith Van Horn for the entire second half and overtime due to stomach problems, were actually tied with the Bulls in the final minute of OT.

But then MJ happened.

With 45 seconds remaining, Jordan stole the ball from Kerry Kittles and went coast-to-coast for an and-one dunk on a Kendall Gill foul. His Airness finished with a game high 39 points as the Bulls would go on to sweep the Nets, three games to none. Steve Kerr, who served as the color analyst for yesterday’s triple OT game, came off the bench for the Bulls. You can watch the entire game, if you dare, on YouTube.
