Check out the advanced box score from last night's Brooklyn Nets blowout here...
I am so conflicted. I want to root for the Nets. I would love a first round victory and want to dream of even making the Eastern Conference finals. However, I am afraid that any kind of playoff success will certainly mean an extension for PJ. I think the Nets could be a really good team next year as their key players are still close to their primes and they have had a year to gel. However, I also feel the Nets were good enough to be a 53 win team this year, about five or six wins from where they will actually finish. The coaching this year has been confusing and frustrating. The rotation is still a giant puzzle, other coach's half time adjustments are always superior to ours, and the Nets' pick and roll is the 2nd worst in the league even though we have a top-5 PG and top-5 Center running it. That doesn't bode well in a pick & roll league. Jeff Van Gundy is out there, Stan is out there, and even Jerry Sloan. I don't think the Nets even need guys of that ilk, but just a competent coach would do. So again, what the heck do I root for? Barring injury, this season belongs to the Heat, so do I root for a subpar finish and a first round knockout? It seems logical, but almost impossible to carry out.
"I also feel the Nets were good enough to be a 53 win team this year, about five or six wins from where they will actually finish." The Nets are 29-17 with PJ as head coach, which prorates out to 52 wins for a full season.
You root for the Nets. The only way PJC is getting an extension is if he beats the Heat. It won't happen. Even if he does miraculously beat Miami, then I'd say he deserves an extension.
