Jerry StackhouseThe Numbers:
2012-13: $1,352,181

Contract: Jerry Stackhouse signed a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2012 offseason. He is now an unrestricted free agent.

The Nets signed Stackhouse technically as a player, but he also used the opportunity as a “player-assistant coach,” functioning as a veteran to teach Brooklyn’s young players and younger veterans the ropes. He also got off to a hot start so shocking it forced me to tell the story of how he once slayed an Ophiotaurus.

Offers: The Nets own Jerry Stackhouse’s non-Bird rights, meaning they can offer him a contract up to 120% of the veteran’s minimum. For Stackhouse, that would mean a contract around $1.7 million.

For the record: if the Nets sign Stackhouse (or any player that’s been in the league longer than three years) for the veteran’s minimum (a little under $1.4 million in Stackhouse’s case), the actual cap hit for Brooklyn will only be about $880,000. That’s because of a clause in the CBA that reimburses teams that sign veteran free agents that have been in the league for longer than three years to one-year minimum contracts. The clause is meant to encourage teams to sign veteran free agents, even though they come at a higher cost.

Because of this rule, the league paid portions of the contracts doled out to Stackhouse, Andray Blatche, and Keith Bogans. (C.J. Watson also signed a minimum contract, but has a player option for his second year, so the responsibility for his contract fell entirely on the Nets.)

Expectations: Jerry Stackhouse has not officially made any decisions about his future and has said he is open to a return, but is expected to retire after this season to focus on his role as Vice President of the National Basketball Player’s Association.
