Deron Williams sat down with GQ recently to talk about… well, to talk about a lot. There’s no shortage of interesting things going on in Brooklyn with the Nets these days — the rebranding, the new roster, the start to the season, the recovery from Hurricane Sandy — but luckily, GQ & Deron talked about so much more:

GQ: Was there a particular “New York moment” during the Hurricane? Did you see something that’d made you think, “That’d only happen in this city,”?
Well, I don’t know if you’d call this a “New York moment”, but I definitely saw something I’d never seen before. The night all the power went out, I was standing out on my balcony, looking outside the window. Out of nowhere, I saw this big green flash across the sky. It wasn’t lightning. It looked… It looked like a UFO.

GQ: Nice. What was it really?
A UFO. I’m telling you, man.

GQ: You really think it was a UFO?
I don’t know, man. I’d never seen anything like that before.

While it’s entirely possible he saw an exploding transformer, let’s stick with UFO. I like the idea that, not only did Deron Williams see an unidentified flying object potentially from another world during a hurricane, but also that some other life form was watching over New York City whilst the city was going through a natural disaster.

This GQ conversation also prompted a discussion about UFO’s on last night’s Nets-Magic broadcast. Greg Anthony gave some merit to the idea that there are other life forms in the universe, and that they might try to contact or watch us. Ian Eagle seemed more quizzical. On a related note, YES announcers are the best.

While Deron Williams and GQ were talking the fantastical, the magazine did throw in one additional question that blurred the lines of realism:

GQ: Lastly, an important question we’ve all been wondering. If there was a zombie takeover of Brooklyn, and you had to choose one teammate—current or ex—to fight them off, who are you taking?
Oh, no question. Reggie Evans. He’s tough. He’s crazy. He’d have my back in any situation. You don’t want someone who’s going to run away and leave you when those zombies are coming at you. Reggie, he’d be there ‘til the end. I know he’d be fighting every last one with me.

Smart move from Deron Williams and indicative of his leadership. Take the right man for the job, and that right man so happens to be your backup power forward who will absolutely fight every single zombie to the death.

There’s much more in the GQ interview — Deron talks his courtship (or lack thereof) from Mark Cuban, his relationship with Nets ownership, hipsters, and more. Definitely check it out.
