During this week’s veteran mini-camp, the Brooklyn Nets will work out Anthony Bennett, reports ESPN’s Ian Begley.
Bennett was the no. 1 selection in the 2013 draft, but struggled to adapt to the bigger, stronger, and faster professional game. The former UNLV standout averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds during his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers over a paltry 12 minutes per game. Of course, his stay there lasted just one season as he was shipped to Minnesota with Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love upon LeBron James’ triumphant return to Cleveland.
In an attempt to rejuvenate his career, Bennett signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Raptors, his hometown team, in September. Bennett would become the first no. 1 pick to play in the D-League and he appeared in only 19 games with the Raptors before he was waived in March.
Amidst rumors of Thomas Robinson opting out and Willie Reed looking unlikely to return, the Nets will be in the market for a cheap front court option. Sean Marks and Kenny Atkinson will reportedly “leave no stone unturned” in their pursuit for what the new head coach called a “competitive group . . . night after night.”
