NetsDaily discovered that Brooklyn Arena LLC, the company that runs the Barclays Center, had filed for trademarks on two hockey-related logos.

The logos, filed on February 12th and 17th, however, will likely not have anything to do with the Islanders’ eventual rebranding as they prepare to move to Brooklyn next year. Despite some initial confusion, these will not be the Islanders’ new logo or color scheme.

Barry Baum, Chief Communications Officer of Barclays Center, released a statement after most of the Internet speculated for the afternoon:

“We have a platform at Barclays Center for each of our non-core tenant businesses, including BROOKLYN HOOPS for college basketball, BROOKLYN BOXING for boxing, BROOKLYN SHOW for concerts, and BROOKLYN FAMILY for family entertainment. BROOKLYN HOCKEY is our latest platform, which includes NCAA college hockey that will be staged at the venue. This is not an Islanders logo and has no connection to the Islanders. As promised, we are keeping the current Islanders logo and color scheme, while adding a black and white third jersey.”

Even amidst the selling rumors circulating the Nets and owner Mikhail Prokhorov, it hasn’t stopped the arena from advancing their brand with an eye towards the future. Although the arena was created to serve as the home for the Nets, the group has fast expanded to boxing events and concerts—most notably the eight consecutive nights of shows from the then minority owner Jay-Z to open the building in 2012.

And let’s be honest, an Islanders’ black and white third jersey in honor of the Nets sounds pretty ice cool anyways.
